New RSPCA welfare standards for farmed rainbow trout must now be met by all relevant RSPCA Assured members.

Changes include:

  • Feed withdrawal times have been limited to 54 degree days. It can be extended to 60 degrees, but only if signed off by a veterinary health professional
  • New standards around the removal of sea lice. Changes include a requirement for mechanical sea lice removal technologies to be risk assessed against the impact they may have on the welfare of the fish prior to each use of the technology

Detailed information about the updated standards was sent to all relevant RSPCA Assured members in December 2017.

The new standards came into effect on Tuesday 13 March 2018.

The review of the standards was carried out in consultation with the industry, veterinary profession and welfare research sector.

If you have any questions about the changes, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
